The Department of Community Services works to promote the well-being of children, young adults and the senior community. We enhance the quality of life by promoting good physical and mental health, preventing illness and injury, protecting the environment, and providing recreational services to people residents of all ages. We work to build stronger families and communities through evidence-based health initiatives, a collaboration of public events and festivals, and information exchange.

About the Director: Wendy M. Sykes, MHS
As a graduate of Lincoln University with a Master in Human Services Wendy M. Sykes has been a results oriented leader and community change agent for over ten years. Ms. Sykes has served as the Director of Community Service for the City of Orange, New Jersey since August 2012. Prior to joining the City of Orange Township, Ms. Sykes served as Senior Program Coordinator for a federally funded substance abuse and mental health (SAMHSA) program for the City of Newark.  In this capacity, she was responsible for treating over six hundred residents between the ages of 18 and 65 diagnosed with mental health and/or substance abuse illnesses. She also served as Homeless Healthcare Clinical Manager wherein she was responsible for coordinating social services and healthcare access to a yearly clinic flow of over 3,000 new patients and 12,000 annual patients. Throughout her career, Wendy has enjoyed working and caring for the homeless population and other persons in need. Prior to joining the City of Newark, Ms. Sykes served as the Assistant Director of Agency Relations with the New Jersey Community Food Bank where she maintained professional relationships with over 600 agencies throughout nine counties in Northern New Jersey. Her experience serving as the Director of Family Programs with New Visions CDC and as a Community Organizer with Tri-City People’s Corporation inspired her to incorporate and serve as CEO of Teddy Bear Christian Family Day Care.

Ms. Sykes’ constant and selfless work implementing health programs for uninsured seniors, children and families has been supportive in providing comprehensive healthcare to New Jersey residents. Ms. Sykes has worked continuously in the Northern New Jersey community as an administrative health care professional where she labored for over ten years educating and caring for residents while implementing community programs for child care, food pantries, soup kitchens and drug and alcohol prevention programs. Wendy is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC ), a 2008 Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society Inductee, a 2011 Newark 50 Project Team Leader and a 2012 NJ Primary Care Association Honoree.
