Orange Police Crackdown on Speeding in the Neighborhood of Senior Buildings

In response to numerous motor vehicle complaints on Oakwood Avenue the Orange Police Department conducted a Motor Vehicle Checkpoint/Pedestrian Decoy Operation on Friday, September 2nd. A total of 88 summonses were issued, 74 were issued for failure to stop/yield for a pedestrian, 14 for other offenses and 2 vehicles were towed. Lieutenant William Boggier commanded this operation at no cost to the city. The operation was funded by a New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety Grant.

The operation focused on Oakwood Avenue between 268 and 400, in an area containing a high concentration of senior citizen residences.

The special detail included Sergeant Brian Trovato, Officer Omar Coulote, Officer Anthony Homes,
Officer Hector Rosado, and Officer Richard Rosamilia

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.

"Our seniors notified me of concerns in their area related to speeding vehicles and we responded with a motor vehicle crack down to ensure their safety. I congratulate the officers on a job well done and want to assure residents that the Orange Police Department is prepared to repeat this operation whenever speeding in the area gets out of hand.

This operation is one piece of our comprehensive approach to keep the residents of Orange safe. I have recently ordered a special Street Crimes Unit formed with the overtime cost in the short term covered by federal funds at no cost to Orange taxpayers. In the near future we will also be hiring eight (8) new fully trained police officers to lower overtime costs and fight back against the recent violent crime in Orange.”
