Construction of Chestnut Street Pump Station Reaches Milestone.

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.

“I am pleased to announce that in March, the foundation slab was poured for the Chestnut Street Pump Station. The slab is 5 feet thick. It required 79 concrete trucks which delivered approximately 790 cubic yards (approximately 1,600 tons) of concrete. The slab incorporated approximately 80 to 85 tons of steel reinforcement bars.

The foundation slab which is the first part of the construction of a 420,000 gallon tank which will be 21 feet deep and is for the purpose of storing the water from our mountain wells before it is treated and pumped to the 6 million gallon Walker Road Reservoir.

Construction of the new pump station enables Orange to secure State approval for additional tax-generating development in our city. Already developers are seeking to meet with our Department of Planning and Development to explore development opportunities in Orange.”

Statement by Arlene Kemp, Orange Municipal Engineer and Public Works Director

“ The New Station along with Mountain Well Improvements will be able to deliver water to the Walker Road Reservoir at a design flowrate of 5 million gallons per day. The new station is to be ready to operate by August 1st. At that tie, the city will petition the NJDEP for permission to operate.

The new facility is constructed on the same site as numerous other projects dating back to 1898, namely in 1898, the Orange Valley Sewage Pumping Station, in 1907 the Orange Municipal Water Plant, in 1909 the Orange Electric Lighting Plant, and in the 1930's the current Water Treatment Plant and Pump Station”
