Mayor Hawkins Honors Orange Tornadoes for Winning Season

On Thursday, December 10th at 3pm, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. held a Pizza Party for the Orange Tornadoes at Star Tavern in Orange to congratulate the team on their “amazing season.” Joining Mayor Hawkins at the event were NFL Hall of Fame star Otis Anderson and Jason Alford of the New York Giants.

The Tornadoes finished 2009 with a 7-4 record, making it to the league championship series. They defeated defending league champion Caldwell 10-7 in a semifinal before losing to undefeated Summit in a championship game at Giants Stadium. This was the team’s second trip to the playoffs. Orange reached its first North 2, Group 2 playoff final in 2001.

Statement:
Mayor Hawkins:
“This party was a token of appreciation for the Orange High School football team. They are the pride of our city. Orange Head Coach Randy Daniels should be very proud of his team for the way it played. I want to congratulate Coach Daniels, Captains Bensito Fonvil, Marquis Good, and Mark Williams, and every member of the team for their performance this year.

Quotes at the event:
School Superintendent Ronald Lee:
“The district is very proud of our young scholar athletes and the example they set for our younger students.”

Jason Alford:
“Don’t get complacent. Work hard.”

Otis Anderson:
“Be a gentleman on and off the field.”

Coach Randy Daniels:
“I’m proud of this team. They are winners on and off the field. They inspired a city to strive harder and reach higher.”
