Mayor Hawkins seeking High School Students for Mentorship Program

Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. is recruiting for his Mentoring Program for High School students to improve the life chances of youth between the ages of 15‑18 by helping them intellectually, emotionally, and socially for passage into young adulthood and/or college.

Mayor Hawkins, in cooperation with other leaders throughout Orange, will serve as a mentor to these students as they go through high school and overcome obstacles and challenges. The initial goal is to start with a group of 10 students from Orange High School.

Sessions will include Motivation for Leadership, monthly meetings with the Mayor attending community events, group discussions, decision-making skills, goal planning and more.

In addition to meetings with the Mayor, participants will also be exposed to different role models from various professions (i.e., government, law, business and medical) throughout the community.

The program needs adult and college age residents to serve as mentors; all volunteers will be required to complete abackground clearance form prior to being accepted as a mentor.

If you are interested in learning more about the program, the opportunity to serve as a mentor, and/or apply please call the Mayor’s office at 973‑266‑4005 or Mayor@ci.orange.nj.us . Please respond before October 7, 2011.

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.
“I want to involve our youth with role models of success, people who can mentor them and help them see their limitless possibilities if they stay in school and go on to college. We need volunteers to serve as mentors and I urge Orange citizens to become involved in this important opportunity to serve our youth and community.”
