Orange Launches 2 new locations for Health and Wellness Alliance for Senior Citizens: 340 Thomas Boulevard and 300 Oakwood Avenue.
Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. announced today that Orange is expanding its pilot project of health education services, preventative health care and primary medical care for senior citizens. In cooperation with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the Saint Barnabas Healthcare system, Orange already holds a once weekly Mini Health Center at 400 Oakwood Avenue in Oakwood Towers, a senior citizen complex.
A new center will be held at 340 Thomas Boulevard, a senior citizens residence of the Orange Housing Authority. The doctor will begin to see patients at the new location after the start of the new year. In addition, residents of 300 Oakwood Avenue are now eligible to use the 400 Oakwood Avenue Center.
Because of space limitations, it was not possible to establish a center at 300 Oakwood Avenue. However, homebound patients at 300 Oakwood Avenue will be visited in their apartments by the program’s nurse practitioner.
The programs were announced to residents at luncheons held on December 3rd at 340 Thomas Boulevard and on December 8th at 300 Oakwood Avenue. In attendance at both luncheons were Mayor Hawkins, Darrell K. Terry Sr., Senior Vice President for Operations at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and the medical personnel who serve the Health Alliance.
The centers are staffed with physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical support, physical therapists, social workers and other medical specialists on a rotating basis. Services such as MRIs and X-rays that are not available at the center are provided at Beth Israel.
Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.
“I am very excited to announce the expansion of our unique initiative to the senior citizens of Orange. The Orange Health and Wellness Alliance helps fill the void left by the closing of Orange Memorial Hospital. This expansion is Phase Two of our plans. We hope to eventually expand to provide health care in every senior citizen building in Orange.
Statement by Darrell K. Terry, Senior Vice President for Operations at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center:
“I truly applaud Mayor Hawkins for his vision and commitment to the healthcare needs of the residents of Orange, and look forward to providing the high quality services that are synonymous with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.”
Statement by Sarah Anthony, Property Manager, Orange Park Apartments:
" I believe Orange Wellness Alliance will provide the additional medical services needed that will benefit our residents here at 300 Oakwood Avenue."
