Orange promotes 5 police sergeants to lieutenant and renews 5 special police officers
In a ceremony on December 15th at City Hall at noon, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. promoted 5 police sergeants to lieutenant and swore in 5 special police officers. The promoted sergeants had been demoted in January as part of police layoffs. As a result of concessions negotiated with the Police Superior Officers Association, the city now has the funds to re-promote them.
The five promoted sergeants are Judith Rothenberger, Michael Piserchio, Michael Juliano, William Gumbars and Shawn Harris.
The 5 special police officers are Michael J. Crowley, Christopher Dottino, Richard Forrester, Lonnie Henderson and Denzal McClutcher. Special officers are used in the Municipal Court and on Main Street. They must be sworn in annually.

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.:
“The promotions will not have any impact on the Orange budget. They are being paid for with funds made possible by work rule changes negotiated with the union. Orange will continue to have no tax increase this year.

The ceremonies followed the creation of a street crime unit, the rehiring of all of our laid office police still available for employment, the rehiring of 12 laid off firefighters, the hiring of 12 more and the deployment of new police technology; all giant steps toward making the people of Orange safer without increasing spending or impacting property taxpayers.”
