Mayor Hawkins to appoint three members of Orange Board of Education. Invites residents to apply.

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.

“On May 15th, 2010, the terms of three members of the Orange Board of Education will expire. In filling the vacancies, I want to choose from among the most dedicated, best informed, and highly experienced Orange residents. I invite interested Orange residents to apply for those positions before Friday, March 26th, the deadline for receiving applications. I invite presently serving members of the Board of Education to apply for reappointment as well.

As part of my focus on transforming Orange, I want to open up the appointment process so that every Orange resident and not just the politically connected have the opportunity to serve on our Board of Education. We have a talented new school superintendent and other top educational leadership. I want to ensure that we have a Board of Education that will be a partner in making our Orange schools the best that they can be.

At this time of fiscal crisis and state funding cutbacks. I am especially seeking those who are dedicated to the achievement of quality education for our children, open to educational innovation, cost conscious and sensitive to the concerns of property taxpayers. I want to increase the representation of parents with children in the Orange schools. Hands-on management and school policy experience are a plus, and applicants must be prepared to devote long hours and make difficult choices.

If you are interested in applying, please mail a resume and statement of your goals for education in Orange to me, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, City Hall, 29 North Day Street, Orange, NJ 07050 or email your resume and statement to my secretary Tonia Whidbee at twhidbee@ci.orange.nj.us.”
